Platelet Rich Plasma
(PRP) Therapy

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections stimulate the natural healing and regeneration of tissues. This simple, safe procedure delivers lasting benefits for those suffering from joint pain, ligament damage, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, and/or non-healing bone fractures.

Apex Physical Medicine performs PRP therapy by extracting the patient’s own blood and then using an advanced centrifuge and precision separation technology to isolate the blood components and create a high yield, concentrated PRP solution. This solution is then injected directly to wounds, injuries, damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, joints, or discs.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. As a concentrated source of autologous platelets, PRP contains several different growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate the healing of bone and soft tissue. PRP is produced from a patient’s blood sample using an advanced centrifuge that spins and separates blood components and isolates the blood platelets. The platelets are rich in growth factors and have a regenerative capacity that stimulates the natural healing process. The growth factors released from the platelets help attract other repair cells, accelerating the healing process.

The growth factors present in platelets are called Cytokines. Cytokines are crucial to cellular communication and cumulatively accelerate both tissue and wound healing. PRP contains a variety of growth factors, cytokines, and proteins that collectively stimulate repair and regeneration processes of bone and soft tissue.

The cytokines and growth factors present in PRP include:

  • Platelet-derived growth factor
  • Transforming growth factor beta
  • Fibroblast growth factor
  • Insulin-like growth factor 1 and 1
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor
  • Interleukin 8
  • Keratinocyte growth factor
  • Connective tissue growth factor

What is PRP therapy and how does it work?
PRP therapy is the process of injecting platelet rich plasma (RPR) to help speed the repair of joint, tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries. When soft tissue is injured, the body’s natural response is to flood the injured area with platelets; these platelets contain growth factors that attract stem cells and act as a catalyst for the body’s natural healing and repair functions. PRP therapy supercharges the platelets, giving them greater healing power and increasing the body’s innate ability to repair and regenerate tissue.

The process of creating PRP involves extracting the patient’s blood and running it through a centrifuge to separate the plasma and concentrate the blood platelets, which are then extracted and used for the PRP injection. PRP treatments are especially effective because the platelets in PRP have a stimulating effect on the stem cells in the targeted area, which in turn increases their ability to repair, regenerate, and ultimately heal.

What are the benefits of PRP injections?
PRP injections serve as a safe, simple, outpatient procedure that offers lasting benefits for those suffering from ligament and tendon damage. Patients undergoing PRP therapy may experience decreased pain and increased joint function and PRP injections may even eliminate the need for more aggressive treatments such as long-term medication and/or surgery.

In addition to the healing and regenerative benefits of PRP therapy, PRP injections are both safe and all-natural. Since the platelets are harvested from the patient’s own blood, there is little to no risk of adverse reaction, rejection, or infection and the body is able to heal itself naturally, without the use of steroids or drugs.

How long does PRP take?
PRP injections are performed as out-patient procedures, generally take approximately 30 minutes, and relieve pain without the risks associated with surgery – such as general anesthesia, hospital stays, or prolonged recovery. PRP injections require no bed rest or surgical rehabilitation and most patients are able to resume daily activities the same day.

HOW DO WE DO IT?

PRP injections essentially resolve pain by accelerating the healing process. Depending on the severity of the injury, patients may require an average of three injections, one week apart. Initial improvements are often seen in as little as a couple of day to a few weeks, with the healing process gradually increasing, resulting in long lasting results.

PRP injections are incredibly effective at relieving pain and greatly reduce the need for surgery by treating injured tissues before damage intensifies.

“Dear Dr. Malay and team, I have been a patient for about 2 months, and I feel so much better! I came in with right knee pain, back pain, and dizzyness/nausea from Meniere’s disease. After receiving laser treatments on and injections in my knee, my knee is much stronger and almost pain free! Dr. McCabe has been working on my balance issues, and now I haven’t been plagued with the twice a week episodes of incapacitating dizziness and nausea. In fact, I just returned from a six day trip with my family to Colorado, and had a great time being more active with the outdoor activities of hiking and swimming in the hot springs. I had no dizzy episodes or issues with my knee!

I heartily recommend your wonderful program of therapy to anyone who has issues like mine.” – Ellen Latimer
